Musical Touch is a well-established name in the live band Singapore market. Founded by Alvin Khoo, the company provides high-quality live music for weddings, corporate events, and private functions, and has built a strong reputation through years of consistent performance.

Alvin had also invested heavily in SEO. He had ranked at the top of Google organically for both branded and generic keywords, which meant Musical Touch was already capturing a meaningful share of search traffic without paying for it.

That organic strength was real. But Alvin recognised that in a competitive industry, depending on one channel was a risk he could not afford to ignore.

The Challenge: Brand Hijacking and the Limits of SEO Alone

Musical Touch had never run Google Ads before and was not sure where to start. Here’s the real issue. Competitors were actively bidding on his brand keywords. This meant that when potential clients searched for Musical Touch directly, they were being served ads from other bands before they could reach the organic result Alvin had worked hard to earn.

The problem ran deeper than just competitor ads. Alvin had experienced his competitors launching negative SEO attacks, which caused his organic rankings to dip and his web traffic to fall without warning. SEO is valuable, but it can be disrupted. When it is, and you have no other lead source running, your pipeline stops without notice.

Without a Google Ads campaign in place, Musical Touch was losing warm leads to competitors who were piggybacking on his reputation, and had no safety net for the moments when his organic performance was under attack. This is why the numbers feel wrong when you know people are searching for you but still are not finding you.

The Approach: The Do-It-With-You Build

We decided on a do-it-with-you approach. Rather than building the campaigns and handing them over, we worked side by side so Alvin could understand every decision being made. Guiding him through each step of campaign setup, brand protection strategy, and ongoing optimisation.

One of the first priorities was to use Alvin’s existing SEO strength as a structural advantage in Google Ads. Because Musical Touch was already the most relevant result for its own brand terms, its Quality Score on branded keywords was naturally higher than any competitor trying to bid on the same terms. This allowed Alvin to hold the top position in Google Ads for his brand at a significantly lower cost per click than his competitors would have to pay to match it.

The campaign structure was also designed to go beyond brand defence. We targeted high-intent generic keywords such as “live band Singapore” and “wedding entertainment Singapore” to capture demand from users who had not yet heard of Musical Touch, creating an incremental lead source that operated independently of organic rankings.

Execution

  • Designed a full campaign structure from scratch, targeting high-intent keywords for both weddings and corporate events
  • Implemented a dedicated brand protection campaign to defend against competitor bidding on Musical Touch’s name
  • Alvin shadowed live setup sessions and studied replays to understand the logic behind each decision, not just the mechanics
  • Tested smart bidding strategies and performed ongoing rounds of optimisation to keep CPL low and performance stable

Let’s break this down. This part matters because lead quality needs to be intentional. If you do not understand how your campaign is built, you will not know when Google is learning the wrong thing. By learning the mechanics himself, Alvin was able to keep his signals clear and his costs in check, and make good decisions when something needed adjusting.

The brand protection campaign was particularly effective because of Alvin’s Quality Score advantage. His account’s relevance to his own brand terms meant Google rewarded him with a lower cost per click than any competitor bidding on the same keyword. The position was his to hold, and it cost less to hold it than it cost others to challenge it.

The Results: Autopilot Performance Within Four Months

Within four months, the campaigns reached an autopilot state where performance became stable and reliable without constant manual intervention. This milestone reflected that the campaign structure and the optimisation approach were solid enough to sustain results over time.

As performance stabilised, Musical Touch began generating a consistent and dependable flow of high-intent leads week on week. The lead source now runs alongside SEO rather than depending on it, which means Alvin is no longer fully exposed when organic rankings take a hit from a competitor’s negative SEO activity.

The result of that diversification is simple: when one channel dips, the other holds. The business no longer stops when SEO does.

Phase Description
Situation
A top-tier live band ranking #1 organically but losing brand traffic to aggressive competitor bidding, with no prior Google Ads experience.
Approach
1:1 guided build focusing on brand defence, high-intent keyword targeting, quality score advantage, and smart bidding optimisations — with Alvin learning the process throughout.
Outcome
Achieved autopilot after four months with a consistent week-on-week lead flow, significantly lower CPL, and a diversified lead source that no longer relies on SEO alone.

As an added outcome, Musical Touch did not just fix his own lead flow. He mastered the craft. Alvin now sets up and runs Google Ads for his own contacts and other businesses, effectively multiplying the value of the time spent together. A skill learned well creates returns far beyond the original campaign.

“I started with little experience and wanted to learn from someone who knows his craft. Xuan Bin guided me step-by-step to build my campaigns, defend my brand keywords, and lower my CPL. Four months later, I’m running ads for my own contacts too.”

A Clear System for Predictable Live Band Leads

Consistent Lead Flow, Week on Week

After months of relying solely on organic traffic, Musical Touch achieved a steady stream of high-intent live band enquiries through Google Ads. The lead flow is now predictable and runs independently of SEO performance, which means a bad week in organic rankings no longer means a bad week for the business.

Brand Position Held at Lower Cost

By building on his existing Quality Score advantage, Alvin now holds the top Google Ads position for his own brand terms at a cost per click significantly lower than competitors would need to pay to compete. Defending his brand in paid search costs less than it costs others to attack it.

A Diversified and Resilient Lead Source

Negative SEO attacks are a real risk in Alvin’s industry, and they had already cost him organic traffic in the past. With Google Ads running alongside SEO, that risk is no longer a single point of failure. When organic dips, paid continues. The business now has two independent lead sources working in parallel.

Skill That Compounds Over Time

Alvin did not just buy a result. He built a capability. He now runs campaigns for other businesses, applies the same logic to new accounts, and continues to develop his expertise. The investment in learning returned value beyond what any managed service would have delivered.

Frequently Asked Questions for SMEs (Musical Touch Case Study)

My competitors are bidding on my business name in Google Ads. How do I stop them from poaching my customers?

This is a very common problem for event and entertainment businesses in Singapore, and the fix is straightforward: set up a brand protection campaign. This is a dedicated Google Ads campaign that bids specifically on your own business name and its common variations, such as “Musical Touch”, “Musical Touch Singapore”, or “Musical Touch wedding band”. Because you are bidding on your own name, your Quality Score will naturally be much higher than any competitor bidding on the same term. That means your ad almost always appears above theirs at a significantly lower cost. If you have also built strong organic visibility for your brand, your Quality Score advantage is even more pronounced. It is one of the most cost-effective campaigns you can run, and it protects the audience you have already built through word-of-mouth, social media, and previous bookings.

I rely heavily on SEO for leads. Do I still need Google Ads?

fully in your control. Competitors can launch negative SEO attacks that drag your rankings down without warning. Algorithm changes can shift your visibility overnight. When that happens and you have no other channel running, your lead flow stops. Google Ads gives you an independent source of leads that is not affected by what happens to your organic rankings. Running both channels in parallel means a dip in one does not have to mean a dip in your business. For businesses that have already invested in SEO, adding Google Ads is often faster and more cost-efficient because you are building on a foundation that already exists, including your Quality Score, your landing page credibility, and your brand recognition.

I have never run Google Ads before. What is the single most important thing to get right from the very start?

Set up your conversion tracking before you spend even a dollar on ads. Full stop. This means telling Google exactly what action counts as a success for your business, whether that is someone submitting an enquiry form, clicking your WhatsApp button, or calling your number. Without this, Google has no idea which clicks are turning into real enquiries, so it cannot optimise your campaign in any meaningful way. Use Google Tag Manager to set up your conversion actions, run a few test submissions to make sure everything fires correctly, and only then switch your campaigns on. It takes a couple of hours to set up properly, but it saves weeks of wasted budget.

What is a reasonable cost per lead for a wedding or events entertainment business in Singapore?

It varies depending on your service, your competition, and how well your campaigns are built. For wedding entertainment in Singapore, a well-managed campaign can typically achieve a cost per enquiry somewhere between $50 and $100. During peak wedding seasons, October to December and February to April, expect costs to rise as more competitors become active. That said, the number that really matters is not the raw cost per lead. It is whether the value of a booking justifies it. If a live band booking is worth $3,000 to $5,000 to your business, paying $100 to $150 per lead is still a very strong return. Focus on the ratio, not the absolute cost.

Should I manage my own Google Ads or pay an agency to handle it?

This depends on your budget and your willingness to invest time in learning. If you are spending under $1,000 a month on ads, paying a full-service agency a retainer of $800 to $1,200 a month on top of that often does not make financial sense. In that case, learning to manage it yourself, or working with a mentor who teaches you the process rather than just doing it for you, is usually a much smarter investment. You also gain something that no managed service can give you: full visibility and control over your own account. You can pause when you are fully booked, scale up when you need more enquiries, and understand exactly where every dollar is going. There is also real value in having a consultant in your corner at any stage. Business owners are often too close to their own results, and it is easy to make rash decisions when costs spike or leads slow down. A good consultant has seen these patterns before and can help you make calmer, clearer decisions. If your monthly spend is above $2,000 and leads are critical to the business, that is when proper support starts to pay for itself.

How should a wedding or events business structure its Google Ads campaigns for the best results?

Keep it simple to start. Build two campaigns: one high-intent search campaign targeting keywords like “live band for wedding Singapore”, “wedding entertainment Singapore”, or “event band hire Singapore”, and one brand protection campaign bidding on your business name. Give each campaign its own budget. Within your high-intent campaign, create separate ad groups for different event types, one for weddings, one for corporate events, one for private parties, so your ads are as specific as possible to each search. Write responsive search ads with at least ten headline options and four description lines. Most importantly, send each ad group to a dedicated landing page, not your homepage, that speaks directly to that specific type of event. That one change alone often makes a significant difference to enquiry rates.
